Come rain or shine: Braving the Elements at RHS Chelsea 2024

It is called ‘the spring flower show’ and this year’s RHS Chelsea most definitely showcased the full spectrum of the Great British Spring Weather.

The 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show proved to be a true test of horticultural resilience. As Henry Ellacombe, the renowned British plantsman, once said, “The fair-weather gardener, who will do nothing except when the wind and weather are favourable, is never master of his craft.” and this year’s unpredictable weather certainly put that sentiment to the test.

With one day dawned bright and crisp, the blooms basking in the warm sun, the next brought unpredictable downpours, threatening to dampen the spirits along with the meticulously prepared displays. The unpredictable weather, some might say, added a touch of drama to the event. Perhaps it was a reminder of the power of nature, that no matter how well you plan, it will in the end reign supreme.

The ever-shifting conditions became a talking point, a shared experience that transcended the show itself. In the true spirit of Ellacombe’s words, these were not fair-weather gardeners. They, and the dedicated professionals behind the displays, were the true masters of their craft, adapting and overcoming the challenges presented by a capricious British spring.

However, the weather’s whimsy did have one unexpected impact. Gone were the customary explosions of floral dresses and flamboyant hats, replaced by necessity with sensible raincoats and wellies. While the absence of the dazzling attendee outfits for the RHS Chelsea Fashion Show was certainly noticeable and a touch sad, it did provide a breather, allowing visitors to turn their full attention and appreciate to the horticultural artistry on display instead. Perhaps this year’s unpredictable weather, in a strange twist, served to refocus attention on the heart and soul of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show – the magnificent gardens and displays themselves.

Thank you to all who came to say hello to us on our stand, we had such a wonderful time. As well as our own stand, we also had a number of our pots featured elsewhere in the show; the wonderful Horatio’s Garden stand, where they cleverly featured some of the plantings from their show winning garden last year, the stunning Alitex greenhouse stand, and the incredible ‘La Mia Venezia’ balcony garden by Michela Trinca (we shall be writing a separate article or two all about this).
