Slugs and snails can be real pests around the garden and are very destructive. Chemical slug pellets work well but can be harmful to wildlife and pets, and need to be replaced in wet weather. We prefer to manage garden pests naturally, here are some suggestions:
Rub garlic paste – the readymade kind in the squeezy tube – around the rim of the pot to deter the slugs and snails. Alternatively, you can grow garlic in with the plants in your pot as part of the display, a solution which does not detract from the appearance of the pot.
Invest in some nematodes – you can buy these microscopic worms easily online or in garden centres. They live in the soil, and eat both the adult slugs and the larvae. You will see results in a few days, and one batch of nematodes lasts several weeks.
Putting a copper band or tape around the pot may help to deter slugs and snails. We are not personally keen on this method, though, as it may cause staining to the pot.
Another natural approach is to put a small container of beer in the pot to attract slugs to fall in and drown. The disadvantage of this method is that while it may get rid of slugs it also attracts wasps.
Keeping on top of pests means that your Italian Terrace pots will continue to look stunning throughout the year – naturally.
