As Winter starts to show signs of leaving and the delights of Spring are starting to show little glimmers of appearing, it is an ideal opportunity to check your pots, and make sure they are looking as good as they can be for the forthcoming year.
First, check the pot itself. If the sides are green, then the clay is too damp and needs some attention. There could be several reasons for this. The pot could be getting too wet, for example from a leaking gutter or a too-shady position. Perhaps irrigation has been left on during the winter? Alternatively, the drainage holes could be clogged so that water is not draining freely inside the pot. This could be caused by roots, insects or soil blocking the drainage holes, in which case they need unblocking. Take the opportunity, to have a thorough overhaul and put your pot into perfect condition so that you can enjoy your garden to the full over the next few months.
If your pot has a decorative layer such as pebbles or pinecones, this is a good time to replace or refresh it if necessary. If you are reusing a topping, scoop it up and use a sieve when dry to riddle the soil away.
Next, consider the plants. There is no need to replant completely each year, we think every three years a complete overhaul, unless you have dead plants or feel like a change, but the existing plants could well be grateful for some attention. If it has been a while since your pot was first planted up, the soil will have few nutrients left and will need replacing with a fresh supply. Empty the pot, discard the soil and remove the existing geotextile liner and crock, which can be reused. Clean off loose dirt inside with a stiff brush. If your pot has patches of green, use an algaecide from the garden centre – just paint it on and leave it to work. Don’t be tempted to pressure wash a pot as this could remove the lovely patina.
At this point, while your pot is still empty, it is worth having a rethink about the location. Does it need moving into a sunnier position, would it look better elsewhere or do you just fancy a change? If so, move it at this point. Then, replace the crock, liner and add fresh compost. Root prune the plants when the time is right to keep them healthy and replant them, and finally, add the decorative topping or underplantings.
These simple steps for maintenance will keep your pot looking beautiful, and make sure it forms the focal point of your garden.
