Long-Lasting Beauty: Expert Care Advice for Potted Plants (and Their Containers)

As the garden awakens with new life, it’s a perfect time to ensure our potted plants are in their prime too. Paying attention to their needs now will ensure they continue to thrive beautifully in their terracotta homes.

Subtle changes in the potted plants can indicate a need for attention. If you’re watering more frequently, noticing less robust growth, or seeing roots emerge from the drainage holes, it’s time to act. Addressing these proactively supports optimal plant health and prevents undue stress on your containers.

4 simple tips to keep your pots happy

We have planted up many pots over the years and in doing so have learnt some simple steps to give potted plants the care they deserve:

1. While your plant might still look lovely, subtle clues like needing more frequent watering or a few roots appearing at the base can indicate it’s time for a check-up to ensure continued health and the well-being of its container. Crucially, a blocked drainage hole can prevent water from escaping, creating a wet environment that can harm the plants and cause issues for the pots, especially if they are exposed to a cold spell.

2. Carefully easing your plant a little from its pot allows you to see if the roots have filled the space. A dense network of roots suggests it needs more room to flourish. Depending on the plant, it might be possible to cut off some of the roots, or it might be a case to divide the plant up or move up to a larger pot size.

3. Just like building a strong foundation, ensuring excellent drainage is key. Begin by placing a layer of crocks or broken bricks at the base of your Italian Terrace pot, followed by a layer of Terram or Geotextile. This thoughtful step ensures excess water can escape, protecting both your plant and your beautiful pot. Raise your pot off the ground with pot feet and never stand your pots directly on to soil or sit in water. Your pot will now drain freely and doesn’t cause the plant and pot to become overly damp.

4. Even if the plants in your pot aren’t too large, it is still essential to completely clean out and empty every couple of years with fresh, high-quality compost, to ensure your plants receive the essential nutrients they need to thrive.
