Inspiration for different ways to organise pots

The garden pot; the scatter cushion of the garden or should it’s placement be a bit more planned?

There are many ways to place pots within a garden, from a one-more nice-to-have, to an integral part of the landscaping plan. Sometimes their role can be simply to add a splash of colour, other times it can be a part of the structure of the garden. Whether you are planning a complete landscaping project, or thinking it may be time for a garden refresh, here’s some inspiration on the different ways pots can be used

Style: Eclectic mix

Sometimes planned, sometimes simply evolving over time, an eclectic mix of pots can be a wonderful way to easily update and refresh your garden throughout the year. It is then easy to add or remove pots and plants without upsetting the overall effect. Perhaps it is worth thinking about adding some form of staging to the back pots of large collections, in order to gain some height, or to incorporate tall pots or planting to achieve the same effect.

Style: Repetition and Symmetry

Unlike the eclectic mix, repeated and/or symmetrical placement has every single pot’s position planned so the overall effect is precise. This does constrain your ability to “tweak-and-evolve”, however it does bring a wonderful feeling of order and calm to the space.

Placement: Strategic positioning

Strategic positioning is where the location of the pots have been cleverly thought out so to attract ones attention to a certain place. This could be done for a number of reasons, such as to add some colour and scent to a seating area, or to add something different to a flower or grass border. The intention is not necessarily to take centre stage, rather they add to enhance the overall effect.

Placement: Focal point

Create a feature in what could otherwise be a vacant space, by adding pots as a focal point. Adding something of interest makes us stop and take note.

Placement: Screening / structure / functional

A pots role does not have to necessarily just look pretty, it could have a much more important purpose. Pots are a great way to add to the structure of the garden with the wonderful benefit of them not being permanent. Whether it be for use instead of a wall, or to replace a planting, for example of a hedge, (or the two combined even), pots can achieve this and you can move them should you wish, without having to demolish or dig up.
