Italian Terrace pots are handmade by experienced craftsmen from pure clay, and are extremely strong and durable when planted and cared for correctly. Director Louise Drayton gives her tips for keeping your pots in top condition all year round.
A: There are three – drainage, planting and positioning. Your pot must be allowed to drain freely, otherwise the hole in the base will block up with soil. 1. Use the feet to raise the pot off the ground 2. Place plenty of crock in the bottom of the pot 3. Line with the geo textile which we provide. Remove and change soil every three years, root prune to keep your plant healthy and to prevent the roots growing out through the drainage hole – the ‘pot in a pot’ method can help with this.Position your pots in a light and sheltered position, on a stable surface to keep them steady.
A: Yes, they can. Our pots are extremely tough, and by following our advice they can remain outside all year long. Our weather can sometimes surprise us, so in very severe conditions you may like to be proactive by wrapping your pot in insulation – hessian sacking looks attractive and works well.
A: Our pots are made of natural materials, and will weather as they age, taking on a beautiful patina which is part of the appeal. If your pots are starting to go green, it is usually because they are in too shady or damp a location which allows algae to grow. It could also indicate a lack of drainage. The algae will not harm the pot, but if you prefer a cleaner look start by relocating the pot to a different position. Then, use a soft brush dipped in a soapy water to gently remove any green algae. You could also use a commercial path-cleaning chemical, but be careful not to use anything too abrasive as this will remove the patina, also check that is is pet and plant friendly.
