Our beautiful and unusual Pannello Pavonne (Italian for ‘peacock panel’) plaque is based on a sixth century Ancient Greek original and represents eternity, immortality, dignity and compassion.
In Greek mythology, the peacock was the favourite bird of Hera, protector of women and goddess of marriage. When the hundred-eyed giant Argos was killed in Hera’s service, she is said to have placed his eyes in the peacock’s tail to honour him. With its rich colours and beautiful plumage, the peacock also has a starring role in one of Aesop’s fables. If you know anyone who keeps peacocks, you will know that although they are beautiful they have a shrill, hoarse cry that is very out of keeping. In the fable, the peacock complains to Juno (the Roman name for the goddess Hera) that he wants to be able to sing as well as the nightingale. Juno points out that he has other assets of his own, such as beauty and size. When the peacock is still not happy, she adds that each creature should be content with their own gifts and abilities.
Some parts of Italy still celebrate Juno’s festival, Matronalia, on the first March. It is a celebration of marriage, and there is a tradition of husbands lavishing gifts on their wives.
